The 2022 Woodcutter's Shiraz is a brilliant entrée to Barossa Shiraz. It exhibits all the earthy, red gravel, ironstone characters that infuse the tannic structure, while fleshed out by dense, purple fruit. It has levity and balance and freshness too, which is ultimately what makes it a great wine. There's gorgeous splay of spicy tannins, chewy and a little grippy. Matured for 10 months in seasoned oak, "the 2023 is coming out of oak as we speak now," says winemaker Ian Hongell. The fruit for this wine cascades down from a number of different sources within the Barossa (including Eden Valley). It's very good.

The vision is to Torbreck Vintners, which was founded in 1994, was born out of a desire to create some of the greatest wines in the world by using the incredibly old, dry-grown, Shiraz vineyards that surround the Barossa Valley. Securing these vineyards initially involved share-farming the property, a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for their grapes in return for managing the vineyard. It was this share-farming principle, together with their selection of some of the most highly prized vineyards, that formed the founding pillars of Torbreck’s incredible international success.

Lifted red, black and blue fruits of red cherry, raspberry coulis, blueberry conserve and wild blackberry and blackcurrant. There is a spicy edge showing cardamom, star anise and Chinese five spice.
